Artist's Statement
Words Take Shape
Shapes Defined by Words
Space Defined by Form

As a visual artist, I have spent the last several years exploring the use of words and text as inspiration for my sculptural and wall-hung pieces. Much of this work is approached in the manner of a visual poet ...analyzing and weighing each word, not for sound and cadence but for the tangible form its ambiguous meanings might reveal. The section of this website titled "Words Take Shape", as well as the lead-in to this website, "Adam's Apple", examine a number of these pieces in which words either become the form or drive the form the finished work takes.

In the section titled "Shape Defined by Words", several earlier series are explored. Here are examples of pieces whose messages are strongly suggested by their forms, hinted at by their titles, and augmented by the accompanying info.

In "Space Defined by Form", various works are seen placed in specific sites, both private and public.

I often work with hand-cast paper ...sheets of paper I've made from a pulp of cotton linters, which are saturated with acrylic polymers to toughen them and make them water resistant, and colored with washes of acrylic paint. Other "media" frequently part of my work are found objects ....anything from a scrap of rusty metal to a stem of dried roses.

This brief overview cannot begin to cover twenty years of work, but I look forward to discussing any or all phases of my work with interested parties. My career includes designing workshops for adults and children, and working closely with a number of arts organizations to advocate for making the arts part of everyone's daily life.
