Gnostic Series: Interior Vessel 1994

Painted cast paper, wood, wire

We have learned about the writings of the ancient Gnostic Christians only recently. They were accused of being heretics as early as AD 200, and as a result, hid their written gospels in an Egyptian desert where they weren't rediscovered until the mid-twentienth century. Several of the pieces in this series reflect the sealed vessels I could imagine the scrolls being hidden in.

These vessels with their inaccessible interiors also symbolize the theology of the Gnostics who believed one could only find deep spirituality by looking within one's self.   (38.5"H x 26" Diameter )
