Gnostic Series:
Knowledge 1994
|
Painted
cast paper,
wood, wire
This is from my
Gnostic Series, a group of pieces which referred to an
early sect of Christians who, unlike both the ancient and current Orthodox
Christians, actually celebrated the story of Eve and the Serpent,
believing that
the gaining of knowledge would lead to spiritual enlightenment.

The sculpted "apple cores" spilling out of the wall-hung "basket" in this work metaphorically reflect this Gnostic approach to the creation
story.

Additionally, it reminds us how knowledge, as it's passed from one generation to the next, tends to get distorted along the way.
